Photographs from Thomas Hardy’s two funerals.

Thomas Hardy died on January 11th, 1928. The first photograph shows Hardy’s body leaving his Dorchester home, Max Gate, in a “motor-hearse” on January 14th. His body was taken to be cremated and his ashes where laid in the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey.

The second photograph shows the Vicar of a village near Hardy’s birthplace carrying his heart, which would be placed to rest in Hardy’s first wife’s grave and beside the graves of his parents. I believe the two services were conducted simultaneously. Hardy’s elderly brother chose to be present at the burial of his brother’s heart near in their native village.

These photographs were published in the London Illustrated News, January 21st, 1928.
